Both types of project have their own difficulties. To be sustainable and successful in the long term, Shireburn believes that customisation of a standard package should be undertaken by parameterising the standard package to suit the needs of the specific customer request. This ensures that one single code-base remains for the product rather than having a separate version for a specific customer, and that the customer is able to benefit from other updates to the standard package as these are released. Shireburn undertakes such customisation by the allocation of a serial number per client, which serial number will be used to determine the method of operation of a feature or aspect of the package.
One-off development requires thorough analysis of the business need, the determination of a functional specification, the development of the software to meet the specification and the on-going maintenance.
